National People’s Power (NPP) MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said yesterday (20) that the Government must propose relief measures for the most heavily affected due to the economic crisis; namely women, children, and the elderly.
“If the Government cannot provide a proper resolution to the current crisis, they should, at the very least, provide proposals for relief measures for those who are the most severely affected due to it. In any crisis, it is women, children, and the elderly who are the most severely affected,” said Dr. Amarasuriya at the NPP media briefing held yesterday (20).
She questioned whether the Government has provided any plan to help children and those who are sick at this time, asking: “What programmes and relief measures have been proposed for them?”
“We saw that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has asked us to be patient. We are tired of being patient – that limit was crossed a long time ago. These are insensitive remarks at a time of crisis. The Government must provide some relief for our housewives at the least, who are very severely affected by this crisis,” she said.
Sri Lanka has been battling with a heavy economic crisis, with shortages of essential items such as fuel, electricity, and medicines being prominent. After months of keeping the rupee at approximately Rs. 203 per US dollar, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) announced on March 9 that the rupee is being floated, with the US dollar currently selling at over Rs. 301. Following this, prices of almost all essential goods have steadily risen – fuel by 54%, airline tickets by 27%, medicines by 29% and a loaf of bread by Rs. 30. Yesterday (20) saw a fresh increase in prices of essential items – a cup of milk tea was hiked to Rs. 100 and a 12.5 kg domestic LPG cylinder was hiked to Rs. 4,199 by privately-run Laugfs Gas PLC.
