Govt. can bring a law to increase wages of estate workers: Vijitha Herath

09 Feb 2021

Jathika Jana Balawegaya MP Vijitha Herath today stated in parliament that the government can implement a law to increase the daily wages of estate workers. He said the government shouldn't hesitate to enforcement such a law. “This conversation has been going on since the Budget discussion of last year. It was said that the increase will be done with effect from 01 January, but it has not yet been enforced. It’s not because of an impossibility of it, it’s because the government will not take necessary steps to implement it properly,” he stated. He said further that discussions in length were not necessary as the estate workers’ previous agreement had expired in December 2020. “The government is shying away from taking the responsibility to make a decision by having all these discussions. There is a simple solution, which is to introduce a new law to ensure that the estate workers get a minimum wage of Rs. 1,000.”
