Govt. decides to suspend Homagama International Cricket Stadium project

21 May 2020

The government has decided to suspend the proposed Homagama International Cricket Stadium project. The decision comes after Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa held discussions with current and former cricketers and SLC administrators today.  Last week, Minister Bandula Gunawardena announced that Sri Lanka’s biggest international cricket ground with a 40,000 seating capacity will be built in a land allocated in diyagama, Homagama. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said the project will cost US$ 30 to 40 million. It was also announced that the project will be completed within 3 years. However, the project was heavily criticized by former cricketers and others including former cricketers Arjuna Ranatunga, Roshan Mahanama and Mahela Jayawardena. Jayawardena who took to his twitter account said, "We don’t even play enough international cricket or domestic first class cricket in the existing stadiums we have ... Do we need another one?"
