Govt. differs plans to suspend railway services

01 May 2020

  • Low commuter turnout continues
  • Changes to train schedule next week
Railway services would continue as is until the islandwide curfew is lifted on Monday (4 May), despite the very low number of commuters using trains in areas the curfew is lifted during the daytime, The Morning learnt. Minister of Transport Mahinda Amaraweera told The Morning that the Government had opted to wait till next week to make changes to railway services operations. “We have to wait till the curfew is lifted to some extent before we can decide on what changes need to be made,” the Minister said. Earlier on Wednesday (29), the Government was contemplating the suspension of services till the end of curfew due to the lack of commuters. Railway authorities noted a very poor turnout in the number of train commuters in the 21 districts where curfew was lifted on Monday (27 April). “Due to the lockdown and curfew, we saw a huge drop in commuters using the railway and so we were considering temporarily halting services, but now we have decided to wait till Monday to see if the lifting of curfew will make a difference during this pandemic" Amaraweera said. Meanwhile, the islandwide curfew in place is to be lifted on Monday for all districts. By Skandha Gunasekara
