Govt. has failed to present second & third quarter figures of growth rate: Opp. Leader

The present administration has failed in duty to present second and third quarter figures of growth rate to the country, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said today.

Speaking in Parliament, MP Premadasa said the growth rate during the first quarter of 2020 was a negative 1.6 per cent.

He said the Statistic Department and the government has a responsibility to release economic growth figures within 75 days from the completion of a quarter.

“However, the administration has woefully failed in providing these figures to the country and parliament. Since the government is engaged in hiding these statistics, a negative impression has been created in the financial markets which does not bode well for our country’s economy,” he said.

He said various international institutions which have a prominent role in managing the world economy have expressed their surprise at the negligent conduct of the present government.
