Govt. has spent Rs.70,000mn to control COVID-19: PM

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in Parliament said today that the government has so far spent about Rs.70,000 million to control the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the amount has been spent mainly on tracing patients, maintaining quarantine facilities and conducting PCR testing. Prime Minister Rajapaksa said the government was able to increase the number of hospital capacity dedicated for COVID-19 treatment to 17 in less than a year. “These hospitals have been developed across the country without being limited to Colombo. The number of hospital  beds for special COVID-19 treatment has been increased to 600. The daily PCR test capacity has been increased to 10,000 from 7,500. The government incurs Rs.50 million a day for PCR testing,” he said. He said the government also spends heavily to provide and maintain quarantine facilities. “We also distribute Rs.5,000 of an allowance to the families affected by the curfew,” Mr. Rajapaksa said.
