Govt. is paying the debts of Rajapaksa cousins: Harsha

08 Nov 2021

In reference to the President’s statements that the Government is paying for the debts of the previous regime, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dr. Harsha De Silva alleged that in reality, the Government is paying for the debts of the Rajapaksa cousins. He made this statement during a media brief yesterday (07). "The President is saying that the current Government is paying for the debts of other people. By other people he is implying the previous Government. But I want to inform the President that the debts he is paying is what his cousins have taken," the MP said. He went on to explain that even though Sri Lanka has received help from other nations, Sri Lanka does not know how to manage such funds. "We have received funding from other nations. The World Bank and other organisations have helped Sri Lanka. When the price of gas, cement, rice, flour, sugar and milk powder was regulated, these stocks ran dry. Likewise, we must remember, when the dollar is controlled, the money runs dry as well," he said. He added that this is simple logic, and the Government cannot blame the previous Government for debts.
