Govt. is trying to silence those talking about Covid and X-Press Pearl: SJB

05 Jun 2021

The government is attempting to threaten and silence those who speak the truth about the plight of Sri Lanka after the calamities of the X-Press Pearl inferno and the Covid-19 spread, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Imthiaz Bakeer Markar stated today while addressing the media (05). Markar accused the government of trying to hide the real situation of both these tragedies. "When Interpol released the results of the breakdown of the events leading up to the X-Press Pearl catastrophe, it was revealed that three other countries refused to admit the vessel into their waters. This was revealed by Professor Chandimal Wijegunawardana recently. However, when this was reported in the news, the Professor was summoned to the Police to be questioned. The government deals with things by silencing those who speak the truth about the present situation," He also revealed that the Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekara had released a circular advising all Ministry members to refrain from speaking to the media. "If you have nothing to hide, why not talk to the media? This country is going down a very dangerous path," he concluded.
