Govt. must seek SC opinion: UNP

23 Apr 2020

The United National Party (UNP) claimed that the Government should uphold the law and seek the advice of the Supreme Court (SC) regarding the constitutional crisis which has arisen by the postponement of elections. Former UNP Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake told The Morning that the best course of action for the Government was to request the opinion of the SC. “If the current coronavirus situation continues, then elections cannot be held on 20 June. There is no point in convening Parliament because they’ll think it is done with a disguised notion; that we are trying to take undue advantage of the situation. So the best option is to go to courts to see how to proceed,” he said. Karunanayake said that the fight against Covid-19 must be given priority over elections. “The Covid-19 outbreak and the containment of it is the most important thing. We have always been a Democratic Party but elections can be held after this pandemic is under control,” he said.
