Govt. not to be blamed for rise in cost of living: Gamini Lokuge

14 Oct 2021

Minister of Power Gamini Lokuge stated that the Government is not to be blamed for the rise in the cost of living. He made this comment during a media brief held at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Headquarters a short while ago today (14). "The rise in the price of goods is not the Government's fault. People are facing numerous issues due to the depreciation of the dollar, the price of milk powder, wheat flour, and the gas price increase. However, none of that is the fault of the Government. With the current state of the economy, the Government is unable to provide concessions when world market prices increase," said Lokuge. He went on to say that to date, even the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) is running with the Government funds and the Government is bearing the loss. "CPC is running with the Government funds. Litro increased their prices of gas, yet the Government has to bare the losses," Lokuge claimed. Lokuge finally concluded that the Government will always do their level best to provide relief to the people, whereas it is the duty for everyone to face the pandemic as a whole.
