Gunawardene who was speaking at a press conference today said even though the government reduced the VAT rate recently, the prices of alcohol and cigarettes would not change as the vat percentage has been added to the production tax of alcohol and cigarettes.
The Cabinet last week decided to reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 15% to 8% and abolish the 2% Nation Building Tax (NBT).
