The government is committed to provide security not only to the parliamentarians but to the entire people, stated the Minister of State for Homeland Security Chamal Rajapaksa in Parliament today (23) responding to a question posed by MP Buddhika Pathirana regarding community police units.
The Minister further stated that at present 38,000 police officers have been deployed for the security of the Members of Parliament. He elaborated that in some police divisions there is a lack of police officers to be deployed for police duties and the police officers request more for support as they do not have the confidence of the public.
In each Grama Niladhari Division, applications have been issued to people who are willing and interested to volunteer from the community living in the domain. Furthermore, rural security police committees have been set up with a maximum of 30 members.
