Govt. to sell Colombo land to fund EPF payments of estate workers

06 Dec 2021

The Government is in the process of selling a Colombo land in order to fund EPF and ETF payments which need to be paid to estate sector workers, says Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage. Such statements were made during the Minister’s address at an event to declare open the recently refurbished Nawalapitiya - Galaboda road. “EPF, ETF and Gratuity payments have not been made for fifty years. I will settle the payments to all estate workers before April next year. I have discussed with the President to sell land in Colombo to fund these payments,” he said. Additionally, the Minister acknowledged that such persons have been working in estates for several years without these payments. “If the Government can't make these payments, why do we need a Government? I want to work for the Tamil community,” the Minister remarked.
