25 Nov 2019

The Government today urged the opposition to respect the peoples' mandate and provide the necessary majority for an immediate general election. Chairman of  Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Prof. G.L. Peiris said the opposition should provide a 2/3 majority in parliament for the president to dissolve parliament and call for an immediate general election. However, he said the opposition demands that the parliament should continue until 1 march 2020. Peiris said the people of the country needed to be given the opportunity to choose their parliamentarians. He said the the citizens of the country have accepted Rajapaksa's policies and representatives must be voted in immediately to  implement such policies. "The current parliament does not represent the peoples mandate. The opposition was voted into power on 17 August 2015," Peiris said. He said if the parliament is dissolved on 1 March, elections will fall between 25 April and 5 May, which is almost six months after the presidential elections. "It is the people who will be in distress during these six period,"Peiris pointed out.
