Govt. will not interfere in AG, Act. IGP dispute: Bandula

The government today (13) said that it will not interfere in the fued between the Attorney General (AG) Dappula de Livera and the Act. IGP. Senior DIG C.D. Wickramaratne. Speaking at the cabinet press briefing today Co-cabinet Spokesperson Bandula Gunawardana said that the government has left the issue between the AG and the Act. IGP to be solved by the judiciary. This was in response to a question posed by a reporter as to whether the AG’s orders to the Act. IGP were influenced by the government. Gunawardana said that AG and the Act. IGP were government servants and that government had no hand in what had transpired. The AG recently expressed his displeasure over the Act. IGP’s response in dealing with his advice over interdicted High Court Judge Gihan Pilapitiya. Wikramarathne had not followed the AG’s advice to obtain a warrant and arrest Judge Pilapitiya and produce him before court. However, Wikramarathne had sought to instead appoint a five-member committee to study the instructions issued by the AG. Following the Act. IGP’s response, the AG warned the that the Act. IGP that he may have violated Articles 12 (1) and 12 (2) of the Constitution by failing to adhere to the instructions and demanded an explanation over the response.
