Govt yet to define ‘fake news’

04 Aug 2021

  • Definition being prepared: Keheliya
BY Pamodi Waravita Cabinet Spokesman and Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella yesterday (4) said that the Government is yet to “define” what is meant by fake news, despite stating recently that a final draft of a legal framework pertaining to regulating social media would be presented to the Cabinet of Ministers soon. Responding to a question posed by The Morning at an online discussion held yesterday, Rambukwella said that the definition of fake news is still “under preparation”.   However, he assured the public that they would be able to view the final draft of the legal framework and be allowed an “opportunity to provide reasonable criticism”, adding that the rights of citizens will not be curtailed as a result of it.  “The framework is being made based on wide ranging discussions and consultations, which we will continue to have. We assure that it will not be used as a tool by the Government for oppression. However, spreading disharmony among communities and information that affects national security through social media is a serious concern,” noted Rambukwella.  Rambukwella said during the weekly Cabinet media briefing on 3 August that the Mass Media Ministry is currently in discussions with the Justice Ministry to put in place a proper legal framework related to regulating social media, and that it will be presented to the Cabinet and the Parliament soon.
