Gradual increase in islandwide COVID patients: Dr. Sudath Samaraweera

Chief Epidemiologist of the Ministry of Health Dr. Sudath Samaraweera stated today (20) that although there has been a decrease in the number of COVID patients in the last few days, the number of patients reported as of late has gradually increased. The total number of COVID patients yesterday was 309. Dr. Sudath Samaraweera further commented, “As the spread of the disease progresses, we may unknowingly form large clusters. This is a very dangerous situation. In that case, we will once again have to restrict travel in the country and restrict the education of children. Therefore, the support of the people is very much needed to prevent the spread.” The highest number of daily COVID infections in the country was reported from the Kurunegala district yesterday (19). The National Operations Center for Prevention of COVID-19 stated that 67 cases have been reported from the Kurunegala District yesterday. Meanwhile, 62 infected persons were identified from the Colombo District, 51 from the Gampaha District and 17 from the Kalutara District. Accordingly, 130 infected persons have been identified from the Western Province yesterday. Further, 18 imported cases were also reported.
