Grama Niladharis island wide engage in protest due to non-provision of vaccines

All Grama Niladharis island wide have launched a trade union protest. Sumith Kodikara, President of the Sri Lanka Grama Niladhari Association stated that the trade union action was initiated to protest against the non-provision of Covid vaccines to Grama Niladharis. Sumith Kodikara says that if their demands are not responded to, he hopes to engage in a continuous trade union action in the future. However, the State Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement that the staff of all District and Divisional Secretariats will be vaccinated in the next phase. The Ministry of Home Affairs states that it has already requested the Ministry of Health to give priority to vaccination of District Secretaries, Divisional Secretaries, Grama Niladharis, Development Officers and other field officers. Accordingly, giving priority to the vaccinations received, it has been confirmed that the vaccinations will be carried out covering all the relevant officials, the Ministry said. The Grama Niladharis have requested the Secretary to the Ministry of Home Affairs N. H. M. Chitrananda to provide the required services to the public in an efficient manner so that they could move ahead with the process without resorting to trade union protests. Meanwhile, the Consumer Coordinating Officers' Association says that immediate steps should be taken to provide Covid vaccines to electrical workers as well. Its national organizer Dileepa Sampath Bandara stated that if no action is taken to vaccinate its officers before the 31st of this month, they will engage in a trade union protest as well.
