Greenlight for Govt. owned fertiliser companies to import organic fertiliser for coconut, rubber and tea

16 Sep 2021

Two Government owned fertiliser organisations have been granted permission to import organic fertiliser for use in coconut, rubber, tea and other crop industries says Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage. Earlier, permission was granted for the import of organic fertiliser for use only in the paddy cultivation sector. Aluthgamage went on to state that by October, plans will be made to allow private owned fertiliser entities to import organic fertiliser as well. It was also mentioned that raw materials to produce organic fertiliser locally are available in Sri Lanka. “Raw materials such as Potassium and organic Nitrogen required for the production of organic fertiliser are readily available,” he said. Aluthgamage further stated that for each Hectare of land 300 kg of Nitrogen and 45 kg of Potassium has been allocated at no expense for cultivators. This is the first time in Sri Lanka that organic fertiliser will be produced locally for the cultivation of crops.
