The Cabinet of Ministers has yesterday (23) approved a guaranteed price for 14 main crops for the Yala season in a bid to
strengthen the income of local farmers by uplifting the country’s agriculture sector.
Co-Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Bandula Gunawardana made this announcement at a press briefing held yesterday.
The Cabinet has also granted approval to procure crops from farmers if they are unable to sell the crops for the guaranteed price in the market.
The guaranteed prices of the 14 main crops (per kilogramme) are as follows:
Maize – Rs. 50, potato – Rs. 100, big onion – Rs. 100, red onion – Rs. 110, orid dhal – Rs. 220, green gram (mung bean) – Rs. 200, peanut – Rs. 220, dried chilli – Rs. 650, soybeans – Rs. 125, finger millet (kurakkan) – Rs. 175, cowpea – Rs. 220, sesame – Rs. 200, kollu – Rs. 250, turmeric – Rs. 80, ginger – Rs. 125, and garlic – Rs. 350.
