Hambantota Port: China to seek reassurance

12 Jan 2020

China is expected to seek reassurances on the Hambantota Port after mixed signals were given by the new Government. The Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi, who is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka on a short visit this week, is expected to seek assurances that the Hambantota Port deal will not be altered and that other Chinese investments will also be protected, sources told The Sunday Morning. While President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had told foreign correspondents based in Colombo that the Hambantota Port deal will not be renegotiated, others in the Government have said it will. Wang Yi is expected to seek an assurance that all Chinese projects in Sri Lanka will be allowed to move ahead despite pressure from some countries. He is to visit Sri Lanka from 13-14 January 2020. The Foreign Ministry said that the Chinese Minister will be on a transit visit to Sri Lanka. He will arrive in Sri Lanka at 11.30 p.m. on 13 January and leave the country at 12.15 p.m. the next day. The Minister is scheduled to have formal talks with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa during the brief visit. He will also make a courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Relations Dinesh Gunawardena at the Ministry on 14 January 2020. Wang Yi will be the highest ranking Chinese official to visit Sri Lanka since President Rajapaksa took office last November. – Easwaran Rutnam
