Harin appoints National Sports Council

[caption id="attachment_19036" align="alignleft" width="300"] New head of National Sports Council, former Army chief Daya Rathnayake[/caption] Sports Minister Harin Fernando on Thursday, 17 January appointed 15 new members for the National Sports Council under chairmanship of former Army Commander Daya Rathnayake. The appointments were made at the Duncan White Auditorium of the Sports Ministry by Fernando and his secretary Chulananda Perera, under Sports Law of 1973 no. 25, clause 04. “You need to guide me too, on the right path. I’m also not permanent in this position as Sports Minister. The sports associations of the 64 sports in the country are mostly concerned about who is going to hold power in their respective bodies, not the betterment of the sport under their purview. “Our sport needs to be cleaned up. It’s not win or lose that matters; it is the way we engage in sport that matters. Creating such a background in our sport should be the sole intention of these highly respected gentlemen who are appointed today into the National Sports Council,” said Minister Fernando. Ministry secretary Chulananda Perera meanwhile said he was happy that the Minister gave him total freedom in selecting the highly respected and qualified figures for the National Sport Council without any bias or political affiliations. The new National Sport Council that is virtually the advisory committee for the Sports Minister, for the ensuing year:

  5. Director, National Sports Science Institute, Sajith Jayalal
  6. Former Director, Sports, Education Ministry, Manjula Kariyawasam
  7. Para Olympic Association rep, Lt. Col. D.T.L.S. Karawitage
  8. SL Police’s (former National Intelligence Service) Mohammed Hafeez Marzo
  9. Former SL cricketer Sidath Wettimuny
  10. Former President, Sri Lanka Rugby, Asanga Seneviratne
