Harin had a civil duty to inform CID about masterminds of Easter Attacks: Weerasekara

19 Jul 2021

By Mihi Perera Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekara today stated that Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Harin Fernando had a civil duty to inform the Criminal Investigation Department if he knew who the masterminds of the Easter Attacks were instead of commenting about it in the Parliament. He was responding to a question from the former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. "We did not arrest Harin Fernando because he was a minister. We arrested him because of his involvement in other cases. But in the case of the comments made about the Easter Attacks, he did not behave like a minister. It is not appropriate to point fingers to certain people instead of informing the relevant authorities about it," Weerasekara said. To this, former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that the Minister was avoiding the question by speaking about a topic that wasn't relevant to what was asked. "If you want to know about Harin's leads on the Easter Attacks, you can ask me," he said, "I was the first one he called after his father told his sister a day before that a crisis like this would happen." Wickremesinghe further stated that the House should be conducted in a way that addresses the real issues without creating conflicts.
