Harin meets cricket seniors to iron out differences

11 Feb 2019

Sports Minister Harin Fernando has met with four Sri Lanka cricket team seniors, Angelo Mathews, Lasith Malinga, Thisara Perera, and Dinesh Chandimal, with a view to re-establishing lost unity among them leading to poor performance of the national team. The discussion ended on a positive note, Ministry sources said. Fernando plans to meet the four once again before the ODI series begins in South Africa. Sunday’s discussion has begun in a hot debate but the players have resolved to have unity among them eventually, the source further added. The future courses of action with regard to appointing Sri Lanka’s ODI captain and the team etc. will depend on February 21 SLC elections. But holding of it is in serious doubt as the Thilanga Sumathipala faction, which will contest the Jayantha Dharmadasa group also including Nishantha Ranatunga, Arjuna Ranatunga and K. Mathivanan, is to go to court challenging Sports Minister’s decision on Friday (8 February) to disqualify their Presidential and Secretarial candidates, Mohan De Silva and Ravin Wickramaratne, from contesting the election.
