21 May 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services is in the process of finalising the guidelines for the upcoming parliamentary election with a mock election drill scheduled for next week. Ministry of Health Deputy Director General of the Directorate of Environmental Health, Occupational Health, and Food Safety Dr. Lakshman Gamlath said a trial run would be carried out next week to determine the condition of voting centre operations. “We will do a mock drill to see how a voting centre would operate under strict health guidelines and how social distancing would affect the voting process,” he said. Dr. Gamlath, the Ministry official tasked with overseeing the formulation of the guidelines, said the draft was still in the works. “We are in discussion with the Election Commission (EC) on the draft of the guidelines and its implementation,” Dr. Gamlath said, adding that he hopes the guidelines would be completed by the end of the month.
