Health Ministry says majority complying with guidelines

27 Dec 2021

BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Health Ministry has stated that the majority of the people are seen adhering to the Covid-19-related health guidelines during the festive season. Addressing a media briefing held yesterday (27), Health Ministry Communications Director, Public Health Services Deputy Director General, and Disaster Preparedness and Response Division Head Dr. Hemantha Herath said: “In general, the vast majority of the population is paying close attention to the pandemic situation and most of the people are acting in accordance with the Covid-19-related health guidelines.” He was responding to a question raised by the media as to whether the conduct of the people during the festive season was satisfactory. The health authorities recently warned of a serious situation in terms of the Covid-19 pandemic, if the people do not adhere to the Covid-19-related health guidelines during the festive seasons. Speaking to the media on an earlier occasion, Dr. Herath said: “If we adhere to the health guidelines, we will be able to enjoy this festive season without any problems, but if not, we will have to face a serious situation in the next few weeks.” He also pointed out that everyone should act responsibly so that there is no serious Covid-19 spread after the upcoming festive season, as was the case after the festive season early this year. According to the Epidemiology Unit, Sri Lanka, as of 6.50 p.m. yesterday, has recorded 14,901 Covid-19 deaths while the total number of infections stood at 584,107 of which a total of 559,684 patients have recovered.
