Health Ministry stands by pregnancy delay request

09 Sep 2021

By Buddhika Samaraweera The Health Ministry has said that the request made by De Soysa Maternity Hospital (Teaching) for Women Gynaecologist Dr. Harsha Atapattu to delay pregnancy by one year is a fair request when considering the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic situation in the country. Health Ministry Communications Director, Public Health Services Deputy Director General (DDG), and Disaster Preparedness and Response Division Head Dr. Hemantha Herath said that it would be appropriate to delay pregnancies if it is possible, considering the risk of pregnant women becoming infected with the Covid-19 virus. He was responding to a question about the Health Ministry’s stance on this request during a media briefing held yesterday (9), and stressed that it was not an act of coercion of any kind. Speaking at a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau (HPB) recently, Dr. Atapattu requested to delay pregnancies by a year if possible, considering the new strains of the Covid-19 virus that are emerging. “Covid-19 is a new disease. We don’t really know much about Covid-19, and new strains of it are emerging day by day. Previously, we said that there were no issues to pregnant females from Covid-19. However, when it comes to this Delta (B.1.617.2) Covid-19 variant of Indian origin, we know that it can cause issues for pregnant women. If Covid-19 is contracted during pregnancy, we consider it a high-risk situation and it can harm the foetus and the expectant mother.” Considering the matter, Dr. Atapattu requested to delay pregnancies by one year and said that in one year, the medical professionals will know much about the issues that might come up, and also more about the vaccines. Meanwhile, Family Health Bureau (FHB) Director Dr. Chithramalee De Silva recently told the media that over 100,000 pregnant women have been vaccinated against Covid-19. “Currently, more than 100,000 pregnant women have been given Covid-19 vaccines, and no expectant mother has reported any side effects so far. There are several mothers who have had their babies after being vaccinated, and we have not yet received any reports of issues from them or their babies,” she added.
