Health Ministry to strengthen facilities at KDU hospital for Covid patients

The Ministry of Health has taken steps to strengthen the intensive care unit of the John Kotelawala Defense University Hospital (KDU) to provide emergency care to patients suffering from Covid infections due to the third wave of Covid-19 which is currently spreading across the country. Accordingly, three intensive care units at John Kotelawala Defense University Hospital (KDU) will be set aside for the intensive care of Covid patients, 24 ICU beds and 12 High Dependency Beds (HDU beds) will be set up in these units and all will include Hi-flow oxygen. The Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi stated that steps have been taken to provide facilities. Wanniarachchi also paid a special visit to the John Kotelawala Defense University Hospital last night (29) to inquire into the matter. In a special discussion held after the visit, she instructed the Secretary of Health and the Director General of Health Services to expedite the deployment of 30 doctors, 80 nurses and 25 junior staff members required to maintain this intensive care unit.
