  • 10 days given to authorities, following meeting with Health Secretary
  • Meeting scheduled with Keheliya today
BY Dinitha Rathnayake  Health sector non-medical trade unions (TUs) decided to end their token strike yesterday (3) as a result of a meeting held with Health Ministry officials. Speaking to The Morning, Federation of Health Professionals Convenor Ravi Kumudesh said that the Federation’s Executive Council had decided to withdraw the strike action yesterday after having a meeting with Health Ministry Secretary Maj. Gen. Dr. Sanjeewa Munasinghe. Health sector non-medical trade unions had earlier decided to extend their two-day token strike which was started on Wednesday (2) into a continued strike, stating that the Government continuously refused to respond to their demands.  “However, we were able to have a meeting with Dr. Munasinghe at the last minute and decided to give them another 10 days to fulfil our demands,” stated Kumudesh. According to Kumudesh, the trade unions would meet Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella today (4) for further discussions. A total of 18 unions stopped the indefinite national strike action engaged in by over 65,000 health employees on 15 February without achieving any of its long-standing demands. Nurses, paramedics, public health inspectors, medical laboratory technologists, and pharmacists walked out across the country on 7 February. Their demands included the rectification of salary anomalies, higher transport and on-call duty allowances (from Rs. 3,000-10,000), increased overtime rates, and improved promotion procedures. Meanwhile, speaking to The Morning, Government Nursing Officers’ Association (GNOA) Chairman Saman Rathnapriya said that 17 unions would take part in this trade union action. “However, the GNOA which has decided to withdraw following enjoining orders issued against it by the Colombo District Court, will take part in all the decision making processes.”  The Joint Health Workers’ Union (JHWU) also decided to have a national protest yesterday, calling for the fulfilment of several demands. JHWU General Secretary Ven. Tempitiye Sugathananda Thera said that they would wear black belts and report for duty and hold a protest against the Government during the lunch break.
