Heat drives up power demand

18 Apr 2021

The national power demand has grown over the past few weeks due to the prevailing humid weather, despite reducing temporarily during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year week, according to the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy. “The demand for electricity was between 47 and 49 gigawatts (GW) per hour. However, it has decreased up to 35 GW per hour during the festive season. We expect demand to rise to 45 GW per hour this week onwards,” Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy Spokesperson Sulakshana Jayawardena told The Morning yesterday (18). The Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy has also requested the general public to conserve energy due to the prevailing conditions. Meanwhile, a report published by the Asian Development Bank states that the power generation requirements in Sri Lanka grows around 4% per annum. In 2015, 52% of Sri Lanka’s electricity was generated through fossil fuels. Indigenous fossil fuel resources are scarce, so the fossil fuel used for electricity is imported and forms a significant part of Sri Lanka’s import expenditure. The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) forecast peak demand to cross 4,800 MW by 2030. Significantly, the time of occurrence of the peak demand is expected to shift from the present late evening (typically 7 p.m.) to early afternoon (typically 1 p.m.), by 2027. To meet the growing demand at the lowest cost, CEB plans indicate the investment requirements for power generation to be $ 2,400 million from 2020 to 2025.
