‘Helped Piumi only on humanitarian grounds’

09 Jun 2021

By Dinitha Rathnayake   The Minister of Public Security Dr. Sarath Weerasekera denied media reports concerning him in relation to a birthday party hosted by event organiser Chandimal Jayasinghe and model Piumi Hansamali, stating that he only intervened to help Hansamali on “humanitarian” grounds. Giving a speech in the Parliament yesterday (8), he insisted that he had not ordered a bus transporting Hansamali and others who attended said party in violation of the ongoing travel restrictions to a quarantine facility to turn back but that he had only allowed them to return to take more clothes for their quarantine stay. Weerasekera said that he had received a telephone call from a lawyer saying that Hansamali and others who were ordered to be quarantined this week for attending a party at a Colombo hotel did not have much clothes when they were packed into a bus to be taken for quarantine. “I only considered this request in a humanitarian manner when I told the Police to allow them to take some clothes, and accordingly, the bus was taken to the Thalangama Police Station where clothes were brought while they remained in the bus.” Weerasekara denied all other allegations and said that fake news on social media would be investigated by the Criminal Investigations Department.
