  • Jehan Aloysius on what’s in store for the year
It’s the dawn of another year – affirmations and hopes of a pandemic-free year echoed by all.  Brunch decided to kick off the year by chatting to some professionals in a field of industries to find out what they have in store for the year. [caption id="attachment_182656" align="alignright" width="316"] Jehan Aloysius[/caption] Today, we spoke to Jehan Aloysius – a man that needs no introduction at this point as he’s involved in every aspect of the entertainment industry. He shared his thoughts on what to expect this year in terms of entertainment as well as a sneak peak into his life.  How did you spend New Year’s Eve?  I had a fantastic night surrounded by two of my favourite things – my close friends from university and food! But my thoughtful friends went out of their way to surprise me with all my favourite dishes – including ribs, hot butter cuttlefish, and Thornton’s chocolates (flown down specially for me). A perfect start to 2022!  Do you have any plays coming up for the year? Could you tell us more about it?  Yes indeed. After a challenging three years away from the stage since the Easter Sunday tragedy, we plan to return with a brand new musical called Venus United. This bold new show is to feature an all-female cast of well-known singers and performers including Devashrie De Silva, Shehara Liyanage, and Ayushka Nugaliyadda. The show is not heavy on plot, since the lyrics and theme drive the performance. Avanti Perera will be performing my musical composition with her amazing talent. The show is possibly my most feminist work and I’m glad to have so many women on board this musical that celebrates female empowerment.  What do you think the theatre industry holds for 2022?  Well we hope that with the rate of those taking the initiative to get vaccinated increasing, we can gradually return to the theatres. The last three years have been the most challenging for all those involved in the entertainment industry. I myself have had to live off my personal savings. We hope that the audiences will support theatre and live entertainment by attending performances with all the safety measures put in place being maintained.  How far do you think the industry has come since the Covid-19 pandemic hit? Any positive changes you’ve seen?  Well, some of us discovered that “the show can go on” through Zoom and online platforms. Even rehearsals were possible, even though musicals are practically impossible on Zoom. Shows with dialogue are possible online, and it’s all the more convenient for actors and directors as well since it does not involve travelling as well. However, nothing can compare to physical rehearsals and live performances. I used most of the time away from the stage to write new work and to compose and record music – which is something I do for all my shows.  Looking back at 2021, what is the biggest lesson you learned that you will be taking into this year?  I learned to be more patient and realised that good things take time. I also realised that having a more fluid deadline makes everything much less stressful, and people will ultimately deliver a better result.  Do you have any New Year’s resolutions?  Yes. To lose the 20 pounds I gained over the last two years of lockdown and to focus on those who are honest and supportive. Filtering out toxic personalities and family members is excellent for one’s mental health and promotes success.  A message you’d like to leave for our readers?  Stay safe and active, get vaccinated, and visit the theatre and live entertainment while maintaining health guidelines. New normal or not, the show must and will go on!
