09 Jul 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The Government would bear a portion of the electricity bills in order to provide relief to the consumers, said Minister of Power and Energy Mahinda Amaraweera. Amaraweera said a certain percentage of the public’s bills for the months of March and April will be reduced. “As a measure to provide relief, we have decided to reduce a percentage of the total electricity bills for the two months. It will be done in groups,” he said. He noted that consumers with low bills could see their bills for March and April being reduced by around 25%. “I appointed a committee to look into the matter and come up with some recommendations. Now, we have to look at the finer details and how to implement this,” the Minister said. The Committee appointed to study and make recommendations on providing relief to consumers submitted its report to the Cabinet yesterday (8), Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Chairman Vijitha Herath told The Morning. “Extending the time given to pay their bills is also an option. The Cabinet has just received the report and must give its approval,” he said. The Committee, headed by the Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Power and Energy and consisting of representatives from the CEB as well as Lanka Electricity Company, was appointed in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, and was tasked with having to come up with steps to lessen the burden on consumers.
