The ‘A’ Division finals of the Inter-regiment Cricket Tournament (50 overs), organised by the Army Cricket Committee, was held on 8 April at the Muthukumaru Stadium, Panagoda. Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) beat Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) in the final by six wickets.

The two teams, SLE and SLSR, had defeated Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment and Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment respectively in their semi-finals.

In the final encounter, the SLE won the toss and elected to bowl first. Tight bowling and good fielding by SLE saw them restrict SLSR to 190 all out in 49.1 overs.

Left-arm leg-spinner Hashan Sandeepana took 5/38 and Omesh Vidyarathne took 2/33 for SLE, quipped “The Sappers”.

In reply, SLE reached the target in 44.4 overs for the loss of only four wickets creating a landmark in the SL Engineers Regiment cricketing history.

Sithumina Ekanayake scored 64 runs in 119 balls, with a six and four fours, for The Sappers. Heshan Hettiarachchi made a quick-fire 35 off 25 balls, with a six and three fours.
