Hospitals, hotels, crematoriums to get LPG priority

15 Jun 2022

  • PM says 3,500 MT shipment paid for and unloaded
  • Claims next shipments will bring enough LPG for four months
  • Hopes to bring at least one shipment within fortnight
Priority in the distribution of the latest shipment of 3,500 metric tonnes of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) will be given to hospitals, hotels, and crematoriums, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe announced yesterday (14). “This gas will be provided especially to those who bought in bulk. There are hospitals, hotels, and crematoriums. We will supply it to these segments,” he said in a special video statement last night. The balance payment of $ 2.5 million for this LPG shipment was made on Monday (13), and the said shipment was unloaded yesterday (14). Wickremesinghe added that the next shipments will supply enough LPG to last four months of consumption. “At the moment it looks like it will take another 14 days for a shipment to arrive. But we are hoping to bring at least one of these ships before that to Sri Lanka. Discussions are ongoing for this purpose,” he said. The LPG tanker bearing the shipment he had been referring to had been anchored for over six days off the Thaldiyawatta coast in Kerawalapitiya, as the balance payment for its consignment had been delayed. The LPG supply has been severely affected due to the economic crisis in the country. Consumers of privately owned Laugfs Gas PLC have complained that stocks have been scarce all year, while State-owned Litro Gas Lanka has faced supply issues as well. Consumers stand in long queues for days on end to obtain a LPG cylinder, which has affected families, home-run businesses, small businesses, and larger restaurants.
