The Health Ministry has introduced a special hotline for the general public to inform about issues pertaining to the procuring of pharmaceutical drugs.
Accordingly, a ministry official told The Morning that those who are experiencing difficulties in procuring drugs may call the hotline number 1999 and inform of such.
“We have to admit that there is a shortage of drugs in the country at present. It is not possible to say that there is no such shortage. In this situation, there are various reports that it is not possible to procure certain drugs, and therefore, taking into account such reports, this hotline was introduced.”
He further said that the information received through the newly introduced hotline is planned to be forwarded to the Medical Supplies Division (MSD) under the ministry. He said that through this, it is hoped to take necessary steps to overcome the shortcomings in the relevant drug supply process.
The Society of Government Pharmacists (SGP) recently stated that about 50% of the stocks of the MSD have been exhausted. Speaking to The Morning at that time, SGP President Ajith Thilakaratne said that out of the 1,358 medicines that should be in the MSD, stocks of 525 have been depleted. Among them are six life saving drugs, 239 essential drugs, and 280 rarely used drugs.
“Especially, drugs that are used to treat heart patients and the rabies vaccine are out of stock. Most of them are scheduled to be imported under the Indian credit facility, but it will take another six weeks of time,” he said. Thilakaratne also said that out of the 8,553 surgical items required to be in the MSD, stocks of 5,376, which is 62.9% of the total requirement, have been depleted.
