How to TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF independently

17 Feb 2020

BY KAYLA COLLETT As teenagers or young adults, we are either just blossoming into independence and adult life or will reach this stage in the near future. As such, it is extremely important to know how to take care of yourself, both mentally and physically, without receiving any help from your parents or close friends, as you might not be able to rely on people for help all the time, especially if you are living by yourself. As someone who is only 18 years old (still doing her Advanced Levels) and is currently living alone, I can safely say that there are many skills you need to be able to do, to take care of yourself physically and mentally, because living on your own is an extremely difficult feat! When I first started to live on my own, I remember struggling so much juggling schoolwork, extracurricular activities, my job, taking care of myself, buying groceries, and cleaning my house, all at the same time, but soon realised how easily I could overcome these obstacles just by organising my life and my mind a little better. Here are a few suggestions on how you can take care of your body, mind, and soul well: 1) Take part in daily journaling and reciting daily affirmations This helps to organise your thoughts into more cohesive, tangible ones without becoming frantic, confusing, and sometimes even maladaptive. Negative thoughts definitely happen when you’re living on your own, since you don’t always have people around to guide and motivate you on a daily basis. They’re naturally occurring and unfortunately happen to the best of us, but one way to organise them into more positive, constructive ones is by taking part in daily journaling and reciting daily positive affirmations to yourself. There is another article in this week’s Happinez issue that I wrote which addresses positive affirmations (on right, page 5) and provides you with 25 ideas for possible affirmations that you can tell yourself on a daily basis to help boost your self-esteem and confidence. Taking part in daily journaling also helps to organise your thoughts by having you put them down on a piece of paper in your notebook; whether or not they are negative or positive, you still have control over your own emotions and can turn those negative thoughts that you wrote down into more positive ones! Reconstructing your negative thoughts into more positive ones is definitely essential when you live by yourself, seeing as your mum, for example, who typically used to provide you with a confidence boost and boost on self-worth you might have needed, isn’t around all the time, hence leaving you to your own devices. You can do this! Try journaling and reciting affirmations to see if they work in helping you organise your thoughts into more cohesive, pragmatic ones.   2) Have your own mini first aid kit Buying plasters alone when you are badly wounded won’t really help you heal, so why not craft your own mini first aid kit for any at-home emergencies (for example, if you cut yourself while chopping up vegetables to make your dinner – it happens much more often than you think)? The most essential item for your mini first aid kit is definitely Panadol (or whichever brand of painkiller you prefer taking), as it can be used for any occasion to reduce or eliminate pain – whether they are body pains or even physical injuries. Panadol is certainly a must-have. Another important item is bandages, which you might need if you happen to twist your ankle during a sports practice or even accidentally when walking (it really does happen more often than you may think!) You should definitely also be knowledgeable on how to dress a sprained ankle! Here are steps on how to properly and efficiently dress a sprained ankle: -              Wrap the bandage around the bottom of your foot (the ball of it) once and keep it tight, but not to the point where you’re cutting off your blood circulation -              Start wrapping it around the arch of your foot multiple times, forming an “8” shape each time you wrap it around your foot by pulling the bandage diagonally from the bottom of your toes across the top of your foot and then circle it around your ankle -              Secure the bandage with a safety pin Finally, get some Dettol antiseptic liquid and some cotton pads to use on a potentially large cut in order to eliminate the possibility of your wound getting infected. Secure with a plaster afterwards.   3) Sleep I know that I, along with many other teenagers and young adults, struggle with getting the right amount of sleep, and especially if you’re living alone it’s easy to fall into the trap of doing work way past your bedtime. However, even if you have a lot of work to do and can only afford to get six hours of sleep instead of eight hours, and despite how fast you try to complete your tasks, you still have to continue working past your bedtime, that’s perfectly fine! As long as you get a minimum of six hours of sleep and don’t spend the whole night working, trying to complete every possible thing you want to do (guilty!), you’ll be alright. Taking care of yourself is super important, and this is certainly one of the main ways to do so. In conclusion, the above mentioned are tips to get yourself a little more organized whether you are planning to or are currently living alone, which will hopefully get you on track with your life! Hopefully, they help you become more independent and in control of your life.   PHOTO STOCKSNAP
