The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) is to call on the Government to provide an explanation as to why the interim recommendations on compensation for the Salawa disaster victims has not been implemented.
Sources at the HRCSL told The Sunday Morning that the Commission had met with the organisation representing the Salawa victims this past week.
During the meeting, it had been revealed that the Salawa victims were yet to be duly compensated.
Sources said that soon after the Salawa tragedy in June 2016, the HRCSL conducted a probe and thereafter made recommendations as well as interim recommendations to the Government.
Sources said that if the responsible party, which is the Government in this instance, had failed to implement the recommendations of the Commission, the first step the Commission would take would be to call for an explanation from the responsible party on its failure.
