I didn’t approve to give ECT to a foreign country when I was President: Maithri

22 Jan 2021

Former President Maithripala Sirisena said that he didn’t allow the East Container Terminal (ECT) at the Colombo Port to be given to a foreign country when he was the President. He said that even during his tenure, several foreign companies requested to operate the ECT but the proposal was not approved. The former President made these remarks after a ceremony held in Kalutara. “I also received requests for this port during my presidency. I made it very clear that the ECT could not be handed over. Also, during my tenure as President, I went to the port and pledged that I would never allow the East Terminal to be given to a foreign country," he said. Speaking further, he said the Sri Lanka Freedom Party continues to follow the same policy. “Therefore, it is not possible to agree with giving the ECT away. Everyone knows the problems I faced during the previous government. Other parties were interested in handing over the ECT but I tried to control them as much as possible during that time,” he said.
