I don’t distill moonshine with a Bible in hand, Kiriella charges at Johnston

15 Nov 2021

A heated argument broke out in Parliament today (15) between Chief Government whip Johnston Fernando and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Lakshaman Kiriella during, where Kiriella accused Johnston of lying whilst holding a Bible and being a Moonshine peddler. The argument broke out when Johnston accused the Yahapalanaya Government for stopping the development of roads in Kandy and allocating funds for associates of the Party during their regime. "I have not lied like you. I am not a person who has distilled arrack or moonshine, while holding a Bible in hand. I am ready for a debate. When these people don't have answers, they make false allegations and insults," said Kiriella. In response Fernando said that as a devout Catholic he is appalled by the way Kiriella referred to the Holy Bible as if it were a normal book. "I am a devout Catholic, but I have a lot of respect for Buddhism. I am highly appalled by the way Kiriella referred to the Holy Bible as if it were a normal book. Don't talk in such a way in Parliament and insult other religions," said Fernando. Fernando added that he is aware there isn't a Bible within the Parliament, but everyone needs to respect the Bible. Speaker of the House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena dissolved the argument by saying that such discussions should not take place in parliament and if needed could be spoken about on another day.
