I don’t think COVID-19 will end this year: RW

16 Jan 2021

United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said today that he doesn’t think that the COVID-19 pandemic will come to an end this year. He said several waves of the virus keep repeating. “I don’t think COVID-19 will end this year. Several waves keep coming repeatedly, one after the other,” he said. He said some countries have already launched vaccination programmes but that Sri Lanka has no such plan as of yet. “The government earlier said that we will get the vaccine in March. India has said they will give only 20 million vaccines to SAARC countries and that is not enough. I’m not aware whether we have entered into an agreement with China to get a vaccine. In the meantime, the government has requested USD 10 million from export businessmen to buy the vaccine. We can find that money from the budget without begging from businessmen,” the former Prime Minister said.
