United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, who submitted his resignation from the post last week, said that his decision was aimed at bringing the UNP and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) together.
However, yesterday (7) we learnt that he informed the Chairman of the Election Commission on behalf of the UNP that the party would contest for the general election separately under the elephant symbol.
The following is Kariyawasam’s brief conversation with The Sunday Morning:
Has your resignation been accepted?
The letter has been accepted.
Who is going to be the new General Secretary of the UNP?
I have informed them about the resignation. For the sake of unity within the party, I informed them that if the position of General Secretary is a problem, they should take a decision. So till they find a new secretary, I will be performing the duties of the General Secretary.
Was this resignation a demand of the SJB to continue talks?
No.
Do you think that your resignation will open the doors for the two parties to join hands?
We let them unite in any way. So there is no need to comment on that further.
There are some analysts who point out that the Ranil Wickremesinghe faction appears to have gone into panic mode following the launch of the SJB at Nelum Pokuna. Do you agree with this assessment?
