ICU beds, O2 demand declines

07 Oct 2021

BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Health Ministry has stated that the need for intensive care unit (ICU) beds and oxygen (O2) for Covid-19 patients has significantly reduced at present. Health Ministry Communications Director, Public Health Services Deputy Director General (DDG), and Disaster Preparedness and Response Division Head Dr. Hemantha Herath yesterday (7) said that earlier, the number of ICU beds occupied by Covid-19 patients was between 150 and 200, but that at present, that number has come down to nearly 100. Commenting on the O2 requirement for Covid-19 patients at present, he said: “The oxygen requirement for Covid-19 patients has also dropped significantly, compared to the past.” Dr. Herath made these remarks in response to a question raised by the media about the current status of the ICU beds and O2 requirement for Covid-19 patients, during a media briefing held at the Health Ministry yesterday. In August this year, many Covid-19 patients had been left without beds at key hospitals in the country due to the sudden increase in the number of Covid-19 patients being hospitalised, and the capacity of the units allocated for the treatment of Covid-19 patients at hospitals having reached their limits. Accordingly, it was reported at the time that the Karapitiya, Ragama, Kalubowila, and Ratnapura Teaching Hospitals were among the worst hit in the island, with many Covid-19 patients seen seated or lying on the hospital floors due to no beds being available for them. However, the number of daily Covid-19 infections and deaths has dropped significantly following the lockdown status, which was in effect till 1 October, with the number of daily Covid-19 patients falling below 1,000 and the number of reported daily deaths being less than 50 in the last few days. Meanwhile, pointing out that the current situation, in which more than 500 cases of Covid-19 infections and nearly 50 deaths are being reported daily, Dr. Herath, on an earlier occasion, said that it is imperative therefore that the public continue to follow the Covid-19-related health guidelines in order to prevent a further spread of the virus. He therefore stressed the need to prevent any recurrence of the pandemic, which has been brought under control to a certain extent.
