The Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has, in writing, requested Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara to make the necessary arrangements to make a statement regarding the alleged plot to assassinate the President and several VIPs. The Sunday Morning learnt that the CID forwarded the written request to the IGP’s office and is awaiting a response. Sources told The Sunday Morning that the IGP had not yet acknowledged the calls made for him to make a statement to the CID. The CID has therefore resorted to requesting the IGP in writing. IGP Jayasundara’s name was implicated in the revelations made by Namal Kumara of the Anti-Corruption Force on the alleged plot to assassinate President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the alleged involvement of former Terrorism Investigations Division (TID) Head DIG Nalaka de Silva in the plan. According to Namal Kumara, it was the IGP who had introduced him to de Silva, who in turn had discussed an alleged assassination plot. The CID is continuing to investigate the alleged plot and de Silva is currently in remand custody. Meanwhile, Cabinet Spokesman and Skills Development Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara told The Sunday Morning that the Ministry of Defense would hold and inquiry against Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara pertaining to the alleged exposure of facts discussed in the National Security Council (NSC). He was responding to the allegations that were leveled by the Chief of Defense Staff Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne that IP Nishantha Silva has links with LTTE, which was apparently discussed during the recent NCS. Minister Jayasekara stressed that the IGP, as a responsible person, couldn’t reveal anything discussed at the Council, and that he violated his privileges as the IGP. The National Security Council of Sri Lanka is the executive body of the Government that is charged with the maintenance of national security, with authority to direct the Military and Police. The members of the council are President, Prime Minister, any minister nominated by the President, and high ranking officials including Secretary to the President, Defense Secretary, Chief of Defense Staff, commanders of the Army, Navy and Air Force, IGP, and the Director of the State Intelligent Service.
