06 Oct 2021

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) leader Sajith Premadasa has issued an official statement where he insists that the Sri Lankan names which are mentioned in the Pandora papers be investigated, stating that the SJB will unconditionally continue to fight and struggle hand in hand with the people of Sri Lanka until the truth is revealed. "The secret financial transactions, including unlawful raising of money, tax evasions and money laundering has been revealed through the Pandora Papers about some characters in Sri Lanka. This is a very serious situation, yet Sri Lanka has not made an official statement so far about this revelation of names,” stated Premadasa. Premadasa goes on to state that according to the relevant disclosures, a huge amount of money in is the possession of the names mentioned in the Pandora papers. Premadasa goes on to question the nature of business affiliated with Rajapaksa and Nadesan to which they could evade taxes and accumulate such large amounts of money. Additionally, Premadasa mentions that while the people of Sri Lanka are struggling with the pandemic and an economic crisis, Rajapaksa and Nadesan have retained funds which they do not have backing proof as to where it came from. Furthermore, Premadasa goes on to mention that whilst other countries have already initiated probes and are taking immediate action in regards to the Pandora revelations, Sri Lanka is not. In his statement, Premadasa requests an impartial and transparent investigation to be conducted and a Parliamentary Select Committee to be appointed to inquire into this matter, further mentioning that only those who condone such frauds are indirectly siding with the fraudsters. "When such disclosures are made internationally about persons who have illegally earned in billions and identified as fraudsters in a country which has faced a very tragic situation today, only those who are part and partial of those frauds and those who condone such activities can remain unconcerned,' Premadasa stated.
