27 May 2021

The Department of Meteorology states that the wind speed in the sea areas around the island will be 40 to 50 km per hour.

"Although Hurricane Yaas has moved beyond the Bay of Bengal, its impact on Sri Lanka is not over," they said.

In the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota the wind speed will increase up to 60 to 70 kmph.

Accordingly, the sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota could be very rough.

The Meteorological Department further states that the fishing and naval community should pay attention to this.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department states that showers will continue in several districts of the island today as well.

There were reports of falling trees and damage to homes in many areas due to strong winds accompanied by heavy rains yesterday.

Due to this further showers are expected in many parts of the island.

The highest rainfall during the last 24 hours was recorded in the Laxapana area.

That value is 73.2 millimeters.

Engineers in charge of Maussakelle reservoir say the water level is now approaching overflow level due to heavy rains falling on the western slopes of the central hills.

It is further reported that the water capacity of Keselgamu Oya and Maskeliya Oya has also reached overflow level.

With the increase in water capacity, the Canyon, Laxapana, New Laxapana, Polpitiya and Wimalasurendra hydro power plants will also be generating electricity at maximum capacity, the power plant engineers said.

A strong wind that blew across the Galwadiya area in Julanpitiya, Walasmulla this morning (27) had damaged several houses.

Also, a power pole with high voltage power lines installed in the Marakolliya paddy field in Tangalle had collapsed due to strong winds yesterday (26).

As a result, the power supply to the area has been disrupted.

Meanwhile, a large tree fell on a bus stand in the Narawala area on the Galle-Mapalamaga road due to a strong wind accompanied by heavy rains.

The power supply to the Kosgama area in Avissawella was also disrupted due to falling trees on power lines.

The Met Department predicts showers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North Western provinces as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts today.
