Important to think about how SL can be rescued: Sirisena

08 Oct 2021

Following the conclusion of a meeting yesterday (07) with representatives of Government affiliated Parties and Trade Union representatives from Ports, Electricity and Petroleum sectors, Former President Maithripala Sirisena expressed to the media that it is important to think about how the country can be rescued. While clarifying that these meetings were not attempts to overthrow the Government, he stated that their hope is to save the country from threats. “We hope to hold discussions with the Government on how to formulate a plan for issues," stated Sirisena. Meanwhile, in reference to the issues of the TUs, Minister of Energy Udaya Gammanpila said that the TUs have been informed that internal discussions will take place before a stance is taken. When further inquired by a journalist as to whether or not the Government assets will be sold, Gammanpilla stepped aside to allow Nanayakkara to respond. "Government owned property should not be sold. National assets are a part of National security. If America owns an economic zone, they will use military force to protect it because it is their national asset. Although we are of that stance, there may be others who have a different view. There may be differences in opinions which would lead to debates. We presented our stance at the cabinet meeting on the agreement to provide gas. There is a balance of powers, but we have not been able to tilt the balance of powers in our favour,” responded Nanayakkara.
