Increase in bread prices: CAA says no control over increase

 Vows action if prices increased unfairly

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) asserted that they would take action pertaining to any reports of bread prices being increased in an unfair manner.

CAA Chairman Maj. General (Rtd.) Shantha Dissanayake said that although there was no control price on bread, price increases must be done in a fair manner.

“An increase in bread prices could be inevitable due to the various tax reforms implemented lately. However, if we hear of any retailer selling bread at unjustifiably high price, we will definitely take action,” the Chairman said.

He also assured that they had the consumers’ best interests in mind.

Meanwhile, CAA Director Asela Bandara said they were monitoring the situation.

“We expect there will be a hike in bread prices in the near future. Our analysis team is working on it and monitoring the situation. But prices have to change first for us to see what kind of increment there would be.”
