03 Oct 2020

There is a high risk of increased dengue cases owing to the monsoons in the country, the Ministry of Health told The Morning. There are 26,000 dengue cases and 25 deaths reported until August 2020. The monsoons that occurred the past few weeks in many parts of Colombo following the heavy downpours is bound to worsen the situation, the Health Ministry stated. In 2019, a total of 105,000 dengue cases were detected with 95 deaths. The Epidemiology Unit has warned the public to be vigilant of all types of mosquito breeding sites and to destroy them regularly. The Health Ministry has instructed Grama Sevekas of each area to keep a constant record for signs of dengue risks in the designated divisions and work with the PHIs. The Health Ministry stated that construction sites are one of the most congenial spots for mosquito breeding together with abandoned structures. Schools that were closed down for over four months may also be vulnerable.
