India assures assistance: Repatriating Lankans from South India

10 Dec 2020

India will extend its fullest cooperation to repatriate Sri Lankans stranded in South India due to travel restrictions, according to Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay. The Indian envoy made this assurance on Tuesday (8) at a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs Dinesh Gunawardena and Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda, which was held to discuss matters of mutual interest to the two nations. The discussion focused on fisheries issues in the Palk Strait, as well as potential post-Covid-19 co-operation. The officials agreed to work out solutions to the fisheries matters through established bilateral mechanisms, including the Ministerial-level India-Sri Lanka Joint Working Group on Fisheries. This bilateral working group was scheduled to hold its fourth meeting in January, but this was postponed due to the pandemic. At Tuesday’s meeting, it was decided that the meeting would be convened virtually as soon as possible, while assurances were given that standard procedure would be followed in dealing with all mid-sea encounters. Both sides expressed satisfaction at ongoing bilateral co-operation measures, including development assistance and joint action against the pandemic. The two ministers also thanked India for its assistance in constructing the Jaffna Cultural Centre, which is expected to become functional soon through collaborative efforts.
